Is racism innate?
No, it is not. Racism is not something you are born with but rather something that is influenced by the people around you. When a child is born, it does not know anything. His or her parents' upbringing and the surroundings play an important part in the child's character. For example, if your relatives, friends or parents are biased or against a certain race, you are most likely to follow them because when a child sees others being racist, they naturally think that nothing is wrong and will, as a result, follow in their footsteps. We are all humans. We are all living on the same planet, in the same country and under the same sky. I don't see why some people should treat others badly or be given better opportunities than people with a different skin colour. I think those people should be in the shoes of the unjustly treated and just try to imagine what it would be like if they are being criticised, badly treated, humiliated and given little or no opportunities to grow in life compared to the rest. If racism was innate, we would not be living in a multi-racial society. There would be racial riots every other day and there would be different schools for the different races. If all races bond together, we will reap the benefits. We can learn more about the other races' cultures and traditions. Moreover, we can make Singapore a more enjoyable country to live in and we can adopt a healthier way of thinking.
